Rockford Gas, Light & Coke Company Building
National Register nomination and historic preservation consultation of a historic industrial building.
JLK is working with a development and design team based in Rockford, Illinois to adaptively reuse the former Rockford Gas, Light & Coke Company Fitting and Meter Shops building. JLK is responsible for listing the building in the National Register of Historic Places, preparing Historic Tax Credit documentation, coordinating with the State Historic Preservation Office and National Park Service, and providing Historic Preservation Architectural design services.
To list the building in the National Register, Architectural Historians at JLK conducted historic research at local repositories and archives; reviewed historic photographs, newspaper articles, and building permits; and studied historic trade catalogues, company journals, and magazines related to the historic manufactured and natural gas industries in Rockford, Illinois, and the county. The building was succfessfully listed on the National Register of Historic Places in early 2024. Obtaining listing on the National Register allowed the rehabiliation project to utilize critical federal and state Historic Tax Credits as a newly minted certified historic structure.
JLK is currently working with the developer and design team to prepare rehabiliation design drawings and tax credit paperwork. The qualified Architectural Historians and Historic Preservation Architects at JLK are ensuring that the project adheres to the Secretary of the Interior’s Rehabiliation Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
The Rockford Gas Light & Coke Company Gas Fitting and Meter Shops Building is a purpose-built gas fitting and meter shops building located in Rockford, Illinois. The first gas fittings and meter shops buildings were constructed in 1915 and 1924. Later additions built between circa 1928 and 1948 connected the original structures to form a single, larger home for the company’s Distribution fleet. Inside, meter repair men disassembled, tested, and repaired gas meters and pipe fitters prepared to install and maintain miles of main lines that comprised the city’s gas distribution network. The building was later used by the company’s successors including Central Illinois Gas & Electric Company and Commonwealth Edison. It is located west of downtown Rockford at the site of the former Rockford Gas Light & Coke Company plant where all other structures related to gas production and distribution were demolished between 1961 and 2012.
