Chicago Botanic Garden
Collaborative stewardship of a beautiful and historic 385-acre botanical garden complex.
JLK served as the lead Architect for a 10-year Assessment and Maintenance Plan for the entire 385-acre Chicago Botanic Garden (CBG) complex. The CBG grounds feature 27 display gardens, five natural habitats, and educational buildings situated on nine islands throughout the Cook County Forest Preserves.
JLK surveyed over 80 features and structures, including all 30 buildings, comprising the CBG grounds. JLK performed conditions assessments and determined recommendations for architectural, structural, life safety, accessibility, energy efficiency, mechnical, and environmental improvements. All recommendations were prioritized for 1-, 5-, and 10-year planning. JLK also provided suggested phasing and alternate scopes.
JLK is continuing to provide full-service Architectural Design services to CBG. Construction wrapped in Summer 2024 on a complete roof replacement project at the Visitor Center, and total roof replacement at the Regenstein Center is anticipated to begin in Fall 2024.
After groundbreaking in 1962, the Chicago Botanic Garden first opened to the public a decade later in 1972. The Garden has hired prominent architects, planners, and landscape designers since its inception. Renowned landscape architects John O. Simonds and Geoffrey Rausch created the original master plan.
